Message: This is absolutely perfect little jewel of a place. It is a small cottage jammed full of character, just one large room and a bathroom downstairs, then spiral stairs to the attic bedroom. It is immaculately and creatively decorated, spotlessly clean, and full of thoughtful touches like books, a fan, free WIFI. The breakfast is generous in the extreme, you are given full boxes of cereal to choose from, a loaf, eggs, croissants, tea coffee and juice, etc etc. It really did set us up for the day. Add to that delightful setting, pub with good traditional food opposite and 20 minutes from Longleat and this is a real winner.

A quick note to pass on a recommendation. I know how hard it is to find good writing retreats, but I've found a fantastic one.

Apple Hay Studio is the cottage in Wiltshire where I've been hiding myself away to get a big writing job done. It's a marvelous place and I can't recommend it too highly. Quiet, without being isolated; small, without being cramped; it's cosy, comfortable, beautifully designed, very stylish and situated in a perfect location. There are great walks from the door and a pub across the green. Jo, Alan and Sophie who look after the studio are terrific.

The studio has a big double bed, a shower room and a dining table that doubles perfectly as a desk with a view of the village green. As a place to get your head down and write, I've never found anywhere more convivial and relaxing. It's ideal for writing, retreating, or just hiding away and chilling out for a while. Or, of course, weekend breaks, summer holidays, and any other excuse you can find to get out to this lovely area.

The studio can be booked by the night as well as weekend and week long rentals. Here's the website:

Joshua and I enjoyed a really lovely week-long stay at your gorgeous little studio, which more than lived up to all our expectations. We would (and plan to) happily recommend it to anyone looking for a cosy and peaceful little hideaway from which to explore the Shaftesbury area.
